Rate of poverty: Buhari should match words with action ― Ohanaeze

Ohanaeze Ndigbo in its reaction to the President Mohammadu Buhari’s concern on the growing rate of poverty in Nigeria said that the government was not really serious that it was concerned on the escalated rate of poverty in the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari speaking during the breaking of Ramadan fast with members of the federal executive council, service chiefs and heads of MDGs at the Presidential Banquet hall State House, Monday night in Abuja.
The apex Igbo body said that talk was cheap and urged President Buhari to match his words with action, other than a shallow exhibition of concern when indeed insecurity has contributed significantly in making most Nigerians poor.

Media and Publicity Adviser to the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emeka Attama, in reaction to the President’s speech said “He (President Buhari) is not serious about addressing the issue of poverty in a state of insecurity in the country.
“There is no way people cannot be poor when their sources of wealth have been destroyed by insecurity; when there is a high level of unemployment and per capita income is very low. All these are integrated and no one can stand in isolation of the other. “People cannot give their best to grow the economy in hostile environments. There is more to eradicating poverty than mere lip service. The president should match his words with action. “The banks are not giving loans except by high margins that cannot be afforded by the very ordinary citizen, so how do you expect people not to be poor. Mr President should better be serious about eradicating poverty other than mere talk.”
